Flying is basically an accelerated form of drifting, with improved stability and control. While speeding can be fun, you should first practice your directional control at moderate speeds. Focus on following a precise path, starting with straight lines and progressing to graceful arcs, curves and circles. Many people like to lead with the nose when flying, others prefer a hands-forward posture. Once you are comfortable with your ability to control flight direction at will, you can start to slowly increase your flying speed and altitude. Visualize a strong wind at your back, or tiny but powerful jet engines strapped to your legs, or large wings. Or all three. You get the idea. Avoid flying too close to the sun.
Note 1: While some protective equipement is recommended for any activity aloft, wearing a parachute can actually work against you in that it implies the expectation of failure. Such an expectation can only make failure more likely, of course, so wear a parachute only if you can overcome the paradox in your mind. For example, you can imagine that you might intend to sky-dive at some point. |
